I was living with a friend in Chicago, out of work and quickly running out of money. I saw a sign that said "jobs available", and went in the building. These were pay per day factory jobs.. People were lined up to take them.
I was lucky and got a gig. I sat in the back of a station wagon with 5-6 others. They dropped us off at a plant outside of town.
The assistant foreman had me carving large wooden parts with an industrial saw. I couldn't get the hang of it (angering the ass't), so he gave me a broom and told me to sweep the floor of the plant.
Not long after that, I moved away from Chicago, seeking more reasonable quarters.
